I may try the latter option, as I am rarely online while trying to write to goal (for the Internets is dangerously full of sirens like animated flash games); back many many years ago, I had a Windows compatible machine that ran the OS Quicktabs [remember that?] and that had a built-in timer as one of the computer's accessories. That was really nice)

What I really want is a word processor program with a some sort of wordcount alarm: you open an options menu, and tell it your wordcount goal, and you could set it to beep, or something, when that goal was reached, or even turn the cursor red, or whatnot, if you go over your goal (useful for drabble and newspaper column writers). That way, I would be less tempted to click Tools: Wordcount every few minutes to get the answer to "Are we there yet?"
